hi guys if im not mistaken when i push the button on my shifter. so over drive is off. Shouldnt the truck down**** or slowdown and maintain the rpms instead of drop to the idle rpm?
i drove a 92 7.3 diesel before this truck.. 2002 F250 5.4. and when i pushed the button the rpms would drop then kick back up to where iever i left off. but when i push the button on the newer truck it just drops and doesnt return
Not really sure what you mean.. overdrive off just locks out 4th gear (o/d) and if you are traveling in 3rd gear its going to rev up higher in that gear than normal IIRC
i mean when i take my foot off the pedal the rpms fall.. i thought the point of O/D was to help slow down your truck. when i push the button so the shifter say O/d off and i take my foot off the pedal the rpms fall.. arent they supposed to stay where you left off and slow you down. almost like a Jake brake
sounds like your torque converter isn't locking. IIRC the torque converter will unlock below 35 MPH unless you have a shift kit like the transgo tugger or similar.
My appologies if this is too simple and you really do have a problem. Sounds like you're using the button backwards. For fourth gear to be available the light should be off. The light off should be normal driving mode.

whats the problem?
When you remove your foot from the throttle, the PCM unlocks the torque converter. When it does this, that will allow the engine RPM to drop. It won't return to an "idle" because of vehicle speed, and the the fluid in the torque converter that acts as a coupling for the pump, stator, and turbine inside the torque converter.

I have to argue that, the torque converter will not unlock until you tap the brake or reduce speed to below 35MPH...
2002 F250 5.4L 2V/ 4R100 stock calibration:
"Throttle Position to Open Converter at Closed Throttle" = 8 tp counts.
If you remove your foot from the throttle to a TP count of 8 or less, the converter WILL UNLOCK NO MATTER WHAT THE MPH OF THE LOCKUP SCHEDULE IS. It will then relock after the "Time Delay To Relock Converter" expires.
Torque converter lockup and trans operation are a pet peeve of mine, and I have spent countless hours tweaking and adjusting to make my trans and torque converter behave in the manner that I want them to.
