Remote Starter

I've got a '96 f-250, it's primarily a winter driver.
I'd like to hear from people with remote starters installed. I want to get one, I'm wondering if it's something I can install myself or if I should just pay to have it done. I'm pretty handy, but I'm no electrical engineer...
Also what brands are you guys using?

Yea you can install it yourself, they include easy to follow instructions.

If you spend the few bucks extra and buy the "T harness" for the truck most of the wiring is done for you, basically plug and play. Only need tap a couple circuits besides it like the brake light switch for example, others if you want the power windows/locks and whatnot to function. Depends on the model starter you buy, some include additional relays required, some you'd need to add em for whatever you'd want to function.

My 94 plow truck has one in it and I installed a few of them over the years on various car/trucks, models with a chip on the key and or security systems are a bit tougher to do, much more involved, these trucks are basic with no surprises nothing to fancy to "trick" so to speak.

Bulldog, they have full wiring details for given models on their web site, however the included instruction book covers it for various makes.

The problem with putting one on a manual truck is that you leave it in gear and remote start it its driving itself through the garage ,your house, or down the road into a parked cop car. (Don't ask lol)

Yeah, with a manual you would have to bypass the clutch pedal interlock switch.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I'm looking forward to a preheated truck this winter.

I put one in my wife's explorer, had a manual, replaced the parking brake cables so they held tight and she used it for several years without issue. Just gotta remember to set the brake before exiting the truck every time, even in summer, here need to use the brake every time or it corrode the cables and will freeze up anyway.

You could go as far as installing a second button like the included hood lock out pin, starter won't work if hood is up, install another one so if the park brake pedal is not down, the remote starter won't work.

That's a good idea most remote starter kits come with a hood latch button wouldn't be hard to do with parking brake. And just don't leave it in gear

Keep in mind that your car insurance may not cover you if your vehicle is stolen while running, check first.

Can't be driven away when running on the remote starter, if you don't turn on the key, first time you touch the brake pedal, the motor shuts off.

You can push the button at the store while running, pull the key exit the truck and go in the store, truck remains running while you get coffee/whatever, come back out put the key back in turn it on and drive away.

An explorer with a manual trans? That exists? I've never even seen a late Bronco with a manual trans.

Yea was 2 wheel drive too, bought it down in Florida one year, low miles, rock solid body.
It was a pretty car, nicely done two tone paint or I wouldn't have bought it. The bronco 2 we drove down in suddenly developed rear end issues. Had the parts here to fix it so I just rented a tow dolly and brought it back, rusty no value there. fixed it wife drove the 4W bronco in the winter, 2W Explorer in summer. That lasted until some guy in a F-350 rear ended it and her as she slowed to enter our driveway, totaled both of them (wife was fine).
