4x4 Low
Hey guys, I can't seem to get my 4x4 low to engage. When it is in low, it works like in 4x4 high. I'm not sure if it is the motor or maybe the switch. When I switch from <nobr>auto</nobr> 4 to 4 hi, you can hear it click, but it doesn't when I switch to low. I'm not sure if it should or not. My 4 low light comes on when all of the lights on the dash come on before you start, but not when in 4 low. My auto 4 also doesn't engage either. It is just in 2 wheel, but I prefer it that way. I have a 99 expedition 4.6
Anybody have any suggestions?

You will need to get under your truck and inspect the front axle area for broken vacuum lines and while you are there look at the motor and wires on the t/case as well as feeling or inspecting the motor for operation while someone else operates the 4WD switch.

Sounds like the shift motor is not fully engaging low. It can be removed from the drivers side of the t-case and checked for proper movement.
On the 99 model there is no front axle disconnect so no vac lines to check.

Yep, the sjift motor can not change to the unsynchronized low range gearset when there is torque being applied, ie; in gear. You need to stop completely, select N, then I ususally let mine roll slightly and you can hear it change to low.
