What do you prefer? The high-dollar stuff (e.g., DynaMat, FatMat, etc.) or something else? Do you install over a rough floor (see picture)? I'm trying to keep this truck on a budget, but would like to have a (relatively) quiet ride when all is said and done. What about insulation?
What would y'all suggest I use to get the crap off the floor pans? Angle grinder with a sanding disc? There's leftover adhesive along with some fibers from the padding I tore out that's still attached to the floor.
Thanks -
Fish
Not rusted, just not clean of adhesive from last padding:
I'd use a wire wheel on a grinder to clean the floor. And for sound deadener I plan on using FatMat. I've read a lot of reviews and it seems just as good as dynamat without the cost. Some people say you can use peel and seal from Lowes or Home Depot, but in the heat it may give off a tar smell and could possibly kinda melt off the vertical panels.

Use a chemical to get it up, not anything abrasive. Mineral Spirits, lacquer thinner, or even acetone. Anything abrasive is just going to clog up, and thow the stuff everywhere else. Using a chemical will allow you to just wipe it off. As for the sound deadener, Lizard Skin seems SC to be the best thing going now. $150/gallon, plus the gun, and you'll need an air compressor. I'm not a fan of Dynamat and other mats that you have to adhere to a perfectly clean surface.
I had tried Simple Green and a wire brush, but that combination didn't seem to be working. I'll try mineral spirits or acetone plus the wire brush next.
I like the sound of the Lizard Skin SC and buying the materials and gun doesn't seem to be too bad, especially because my neighbor has a compressor. I just worry about when I could install it as I don't have a heated garage and the manufacturer suggests not installing their product when it's below 70F.
fat mat works well, i've tried it in 69 highboy with hardly any exhaust and you could still hear the radio and actually talk to the passenger without having to yell over engine and road noise.
I'm going to try Jc witney sound deadner. It's the same stuf that mcmaster carr sells. If you buy the 10x13 sheets it's really cheap.
I'm hoping two units will do my whole interior. Plus the bare spaces under the dash.
I've installed Eastwoods Sound Deadner in my '78 Crewcab. Supposed to be just as good if not better than Dynomat but at a fraction of the cost. Aluminum sheeting (heat barrier) with a thick rubber backing (noise/vibration suppression) with a real sticky adhesive already applied (easy application). Cut it with a scissors. Just peel the backing paper off and stick it on....it's hard to peel back off.
