im looking into buying a 1977 f250. someone put a c6 auto in it and got rid of the manual, now i personally love manuals, so what years of transmissions can i put in this 77, id love a 5 speed if it was possible. and i got a 88 tranny sittin in my lawn, im guessing that wont fit... someone give me some input please.
ok, wich encine is in the 77? an what trans is settin on the lawn? if the truck has a
351m/400 or 429/460 in it the trans stuff is interchangable. if the 88 trans is for a small block 300, 302, 351w, then it wont fit. but a bit more info on what you got willl help. also the 4 gears have interchangable bell housings until they are the aluminum cases. the 5 speeds (like a zf 542) are usually integrated bell housing.
first off, sorry it took me so long to get back to ya, been traveling. the 400 has the bigblock bolt pattern. unless the 88 trans has a removable bellhousing, you cant use it in your truck. if you were to look for the 460 zf 542 (5 spd stick) it should be a bolt in once you change to a flywheel, an i would recommend a 12" clutch. now the area of the upgrade to the newer style trans, is you would probably have to fabricate the rear trans crossmember. the years for the 460 trans to look for are 90-97. since your truck has been swapped to the auto trans you need a manual crossmember. not that big a deal or you could fab up your own. tthe frame width on your 77 should be 32". the newer trucks are a 35" wide frame, so the newer crossmember would have to be cut down. other option is to find a 73-79 4 speed with transfer case an crossmember, an then the clutch pedal an linkage. easy swap. let me know if all this helps or if others have more input
