I read in a post somewhere on this forum that when installing a new stereo console in the Aerostar, you have to do some re-wiring in lieu of the control pad behind the driver's seat on the left side. What would I have to do wiring-wise, and where?
As I've mentioned many times before, I drive an '89 XL, and the wiring in there is a bit archaic.
It depends on if your Aerostar has a premium sound system or not.
If it does not have the premium sound system, you do not have to do any re-wiring. Just get the wiring harness and plug it in to the harness in the van.
If it has the premium sound system, there is an amplifier between the stereo and the rear speakers. I helped a friend install a stereo in a van with this system and we ended up running new wires to the back speakers and replacing the 2 6x9s.
The easiest way to tell if you have the premium system or not is by wether your van has an equalizer below the stereo or not.
If it has one, it is the premium system.
If it does not have one, it is not.
It took me 10 minutes to install the CD player in our van with out the premium system, it took about 2 hours to install the CD player in the van with the premium system.
Hi this is what i had to do , depending on the year of your van and if you have the rear controls you will have to rewire all speckers to bypass the power unit in the R control unit. however i just replace my deck and bought a wiring harness, from walmart $10.00 took me about 30 min to install myself on a 96
Hey, I just installed a cd player in my 93 aerostar van. It took me nearly 6 hours to install. Initially I used the color of the wires to connect my speakers; however, I could not get all of them to work. As a result myself and two other guys attempted to determine the problem. No matter what we tried to do, we could not get the stereo to play with all speakers. Sometimes only the left side would work other times only the front speakers and no rear, or vice versa. We checked the wires with an ohm monitor for continuity and still nothing. Finally, by the end of the evening we had the stereo running. As we looked down to finish the wiring we noticed something extremely interesting: The wires were connected in the same pattern as we had begun some 6 hours earlier. My stereo works, but I am not sure why? Any ideas?
Well I got the problem fixed. I had that problem with only some of my speakers working. I had no idea what it was, probably a short or broken wire near the driver's side door. All I did was take down some of the paneling, run some standard speaker wire (you get some whenever you buy speakers), and hook it up manually. Works good now. I guess that wiring was getting REAL old. The wires up front still work, though.
Anyway, that's what I had to do. Not a huge job but time consuming.
Even without the premium sound, those systems have a common ground wiring system, there is an adapter you can purchase to fix this problem for around $20.(Most car stereo shops can get it). I found this out when I put in a new CD deck and everything ran great, for about 10 minutes then there was noise and speakers cutting out. Speakers were fine, so I just rewired since I was replacing what was in there anyways. I now have 2 15" subs, which sound great in these vans. Like a speaker box on wheels.
OK guys, I bought the wiring harness for my 93 Aerostar without the premium system. The rear speakers just don't seem to work. I'm really confused because you guys say that it should work fine. Do I really have to rewire the back speakers? What a pain.
On the panel directly behind the driver there is a switch that turns the rear speakers on/off. Often the kids play with it, and the speakers would shut off. Check that first.
Yeah the Aerostar has the floating ground and also the speakers wiring is different at the harness then other Fords. The rear speaker wires dont use the same position in the harness because of the rear remote tuning of the radio. Its 3 wires that have to go to different positions.
