Clutch life?

Gentlemen,

In general, what is typical life of a clutch used in general driving mostly city and weekly towing a two horse trailer driven by typical drivers? Not necessarily in aerostars, just general information from your experience and observation of friends.

I think that it mainly depends on who is driving it and how they are driving it.

On average on a Ford F-series diesel, they last at least 100k mi if the driver knows how to shift right.

On my '84 Tempo the original lasted until its death at 240k mi.

On my '93 Tempo it lasted until 77k mi, and I suspect that the first accident I had in it has something to do with the clutch and throwout bearings going out. Everything was shifted, something you expect from going from 60mph to 0 in less than a second.

SHO's are notoriouos for needing clutch jobs every 50k mi. But of coarse it is a high performance car.

My '96 Contour just past 60k mi and the clutch in it is good (knock hard on wood.)

nice thing about a clutch replacement is that it is a real DIYer one day job even in a HD diesel PU

please, no resting of left foot on clutch pedal while driving, drives the throw out bearing into fission state

About 50k for clutch disk, 100-150k for pressure plate (if you replace bad disk in time), 50-150 k for master and slave cylinders, 50-100k for bearings, 50k for flex pipe, unlimited for rod, flightwheel.

In my truck, the clutchs last about 200,000 mi. And the Master cylinder lasted about 300,000. I'm not sure what may have been replaced the last time the clutch was serviced.

I only ever drove cars with clutches in england (automatics were more expensive) and the most I ever got out of a clutch was 130000mls this was in a 2.0 ford cortina GT a pretty hot car in it's day. The milage was done on quite heavly congested roads and a lot of town driving, clutch life really depends on the way you drive and the conditions you drive in.

clutch component life also dependent upon whether driver used downshifting engine compress for slowing down at every stop...most drivers today do not with the outstanding power disc brakes on newer vehicles

nothing like the sound of a small block built Chev with Big Boob Headers, a big 800 cfm over rich 4 barrel and a 4 speed turned up to 8 grand and let rack off on compression braking
