Time to flush......

Well, I am wanting to flush my coolant system. I cannot use the water from the house, to much crap in it. I am going to use distilled water. It is cheap enough. What is the best way for me to flush the system? I am going to get my anti-freeze from NAPA as well as the SCA and the test strips. I know I need 4 gallons of anti-freeze and 4 gallons of distilled. I am going to buy 12 gallons of distilled to flush the system.

I have also removed the bed to access the fuel tanks. I am going to replace my pick up tubes and upgrade my filler necks somehow. I have already removed the inner tube from the filler necks.....that sucked. Now I just need to know how to vent it correctly. The rear tank vent line was pinched off because of the bed. I can't believe it has been like that for this long. I am also going to replace my shocks. I am thinking of the shocks with the coil around them. What do you think? Overkill? What would you suggest for rear shocks. I do have a gooseneck trailer and I do use it to haul my skid steer and my track ho. Anyway, busy day and busy tomorrow too.

Thanks for the help guys.

John

Wait a minute. You drink, cook and shower with the water in the house but it's not good enough to do an engine/radiator flush with?

Far as shocks go, I'd rather have an overload spring than the shock/overload combo. Truck rides rough enough when empty. A regular overload spring won't be used until necessary.

I don't drink or cook w/it.....LOL Showering is ok with the water. Well that makes sense on the shocks. Just trying to thing of what I can do with the bed off right now. I am definitely doing the pick up tube repairs and vent upgrade! LOL

I have called several auto parts stores in regards to replacing my pick up tubes in my fuel tanks. They all are telling me there is no such a thing. So how do I repair my tubes. Just clamp a piece of hose onto it? I haven't taken them apart yet as I am still driving the truck. Either way, how are you guys fixing this?

Last question, what are you guys using for a vent with the filler neck upgrade? How are you installing it?

Thanks,

John

the reason why using distilled water rather than tap water,is because tap water contains minerals, which will cause corrosion and sludge (really nasty looking brown water) slowing down flow, and eating away at the coolant passages/radiator/water pump etc.etc.
distilled water is like 55 or 65 cents a gallon (last i checked) at walmart.
only 4 gallons are required.so really there's no reason to use tap water that is full of minerals.
many people actually go beyond this, and install coolant filters too, such as the most common ones sold at NAPA.

Last time I heard, a FLUSH was not the same as a drain and fill. I see no reason to use distilled water for a FLUSH. Whatever small amount of tap water left isn't going to affect anything.

Far as water filters go, I've had water filters on every diesel I've owned since 1974. Water filters were common on semi trucks even before that. You would be surprised at the amount of junk in a brand new gas powered cooling system, let alone the system of a diesel.
