Basic electronics question

i ws under the truck replacing the shift lever seal on the tranny
when i finished i noticed a wire hanging. it was near the rear of a connector on the tranny by looking at the connector it wasnt to far of to think it may go there.

i decided not to plug it in being there were about three prongs on it and i only had one loose wire

i go to start it up and nothing

hmm i said what the heck and pluged it in one of the prongs ..
it worked she turned over

i think the rear connector on the tranny is for the back up lights

should i run a big guage wire from the ground of the battery to the car body or a engine screw

i followed that lost wire and it goes to some kind of relay or converter than to ground but it maybe at best a 16 guage kind of a small wire for a ground i thought

kind of odd

any advice

its not a ford engine or tranny ( its a 440/a727b)

so the wiring may be off a little..

thanks guys

that doesn't sound like any ground I ever heard of. To small of a wire. Could it be a neutral safety switch? I don't know that trans.
EDIT: Well I guess it could be a ground for a component. But was thinking you ment chassis ground. I would think its some type of safety device on the trans. Don't see how a wire off the backup lights would keep the engine from turning over.

Well, if it's not a Ford engine or tranny, what kind is it?????

Never mind we don't want to know!

The wires you are talking about are probably the connections for your "Neutral Switch and Back up Lights Switch."

If you don't know what the thing is out of, then you won't know the wire colors or hook ups....so it's hard to help you. The ignition switch will not work until the switch is wired direct with out the Neutral Saftery switch or you hook this up right.

Here's a drawing of the Ford NSS hook-ups:

That is definitely your neutral safety/reverse light switch. The center terminal should be for the neutral safety switch. The switch connects that terminal to ground when the transmission is in park or neutral and provides a ground path for the starter relay circuit. That rectangular relay that you mentioned is a standard Mopar starter relay. It probably looks like this:

The other two terminals are for the reverse light switch. If you want to get the proper pigtail that plugs into the switch, Napa has it available as part# ECH EC187. It looks like this:

and you can find it here:

You guys nail it every time.

Sorry about that Julies i thought saying 440 would give a clue to what engine it was. its a dodge, mopar. same with the tranny.

Blue, yep i plugged it in the center thats when it turned over. Im going to take the advice and do it the right way

got lucky on that one

sounds like its about time to look at the wiring (easier said than done)

im still trying to take it for a joy ride but things keep popping up

its all good.

Thanks guys!

-have a good night.

Naaaahhhh, I know from nothin' about MOPAR stuff. As far as I know a 440 was an airplane that CONVAIR built in the 50s.

But, I'm glad Joe was able to give you the right answer.

Well, if you're talking about "Basic" electronics, the best way to do a "ground" is to run all grounds to the same point. whether it be engine block, frame or "body".....

Since the highest current draw "items" are on the engine block (starter & ALT/GEN), you should make the engine block your common ground.

That's where the connections should be the cleanest & tightest!

I don't like grounding lights and other accessories to the body, frame etc, because all those parts eventually get loose, and rusty etc...

It's like grounding through a trailer hitch. Eventually the trailer lights stop working because the hitch gets a little rusty.

The ground connection must be at least as good as any "+" power connection and the ground wire must be big enough to handle at least the maximum amount of AMPS that all the accessories would draw at the same time.....
