hubs wont engage?

hubs wont engage?
My hubs will only engage if the truck is moving, if im stuck and just spinning the rear tires i have to get out and manualy lock them. I hear the pump run when i cycle the key and the hoses to the hubs seem fine. Anyone with the same issue?

The seals on the hubs could be bad, You can use a "Mity-Vac" brake bleed tool with a vacuume gauge and pull a few inches of vac of each hub in turn where the vac hose connects to check the seals and locking action by trying to turn the axle shaft while testing.

Do they stay engaged if you turn them back to auto? If so you don't have a vac problem. Sometimes it will take a little movement for one of them to engage. Remember the front diff is open, not limited slip. If one doesn't engage it will act as neither is engaged.

Could be the yellow o-ring inside the wheel hub is bad. Look here.
