Auto hubs quite commonly fail. Not sure on all the possible failure modes, but sometimes the "points" on the cam break and won't bite, or something else breaks.
1st thing I'd do, is verify visually that the transfer case is really engaging when you hear it work. check the driveshaft and make sure it's spinning. Then replace the auto hubs. Be a lot cheaper to replace them with manual hubs.

After turning them on try driving it backwards for a couple of feet it may assist in the locking but first as said before engae the 4 wheel and check to see if the driveshaft has locked in. If so I would drive it backwards for a couple of feet then see if it engages the hubs. Treat it the same as disengaging the hubs. If the thing doesn't engage the driveshaft then tap it with a hammer if it then goes in you have a funky solenoid that needs to be replaced or cleaned.
