Do you really need the clutch spring compressor?

SO I am rebuilding a 1984 C6 transmission. Do I really need a special tool that I am hopefully only going to use once or can I just push the spring back with a couple of screwdrivers or something to get to the other snap rings down by the reverse clutch. Thanks for the help

The ones I've done I just pushed the spring down and put the snap ring in. It was probably a lot harder than that, but that's all I can remember on them right now.

I have never been able to do that. I bought both spring compressing tools. One for the clutch pack and the one for the pack at the rear of the case.

I am glad I got them. They will never expire and it looks like I will need them for future builds.

You can use a long bolt through the drum with big washers on either end.

The same with the case.
