It looks like I'll be replacing the water pump and thermastat on my 2000 7.3.I appreciate suggestions as to the best mfg., part #'s, costs and replacement instructions. Thanks.
Talk to Clay at Riffraff he has good prices on oem pumps and thermostats.
Yes Talk to Clay, he is the man. I just ordered the water pump, t-stat and housing from him. He got me all set up quickly and for a good price. As soon as I get the 6.0 intercooler, I will tackle this job.
When should the water pump be replaced? Or rather, when do they typically fail and what are the symptoms? Do they go in a catastrophic fashion and take out other parts along the way, or just weeping, or somewhere in between?

When they fail, they usually fall somewhere between a small drip to a horse pissing on a flat rock.
My F250 slowly gave out over time, with minimal leaking, but eventually a very loud water pump pulley giving up the ghost. My Excursion went out like a giant Clysdale straddling a plateau.

When mine went it was all of a sudden, I was only about 1 1/2 miles from home, still lost about 1 gal coolant. I had just flushed and changed antifreeze a couple of months prior, the bearing was extremely loose.
I'm on my third pump (I think, 376K +) and I have noticed they last around 100K miles as a rule of thumb. I have a coolant filter as well, hoping this may extend the pump life. As others have said, it is a simple R&R, just a little time and patience required as always.
Good luck,
Mine started intermittently dripping from the drain hole. Not when engine was warm but in the morning after truck was sitting for a while. I replaced thermostat, upper (around belt )and lower hoses, thermostat housing and all bolts with new. I did it at 115K miles and it was the 2nd pump installed on the truck. Took a couple hours. The factory pump was replaced by previous owner at 55K miles by Ford. Hopefully I get more than 55K on the one I just put in.
