Rebuilt 460 question

I am very new to this type work and am having fun restoring the old trucks. I am putting a 460 CID in the 73 F-350 I just bought.

I am only going to use this for towing and hauling around the house. So I have bought a core engine 1986 460 for the brackets and parts.

I am planning on buying a long block from a crate engine supplier. They list the parts and numbers as follows.

I am putting on a

750 Edlebrock Carb
Edlebrock Aluminum intake

And buying a long block 1972 - 1978 with,

Heads, D3VE - A2B, D4VE, D5VE
Block Casting D1VE - A2B
No Smog Crank 2y

I am assuming that there are some choices for the heads as listed and reading through the forum it seems that heads will change the horsepower and torque.

Should I be making some decisions when buying the short block or just taking the stock long block. To make it a better tow vehicle.

whats wrong with the core engine you have?
D9 block with E6 heads is a good combo.

never heard of D4, or D5 heads.
good heads for your application would be D3VE, or E6TE both are closed chamber large volume heads. ~95cc.. They both have a quench pad, but keep compression tolerable when running a small dish piston.

You can run early heads, however you'll need a lot larger dish of a piston.

IMO i'd rebuild the block you have. There are some simple changes one can make that the long/shortblock approach will most likely not do.
Price wise....you might spend a bit more rebuilding but at least you'll know whats in it at the end.
Another thing to consider is what trans you're using. Your core is an external balance, while that longblock is internal, so you're flexplate/flywheel is going to need to be changed or modified. Things to consider.

Llittle Husky, I had gone away from my core due to the difference I could get in the warranty. It was significantly more with the long block. It is 100K compared to 12K and the difference in price was about $500 more for shipping and the price difference. It would be easier for me to just stay in So California and save all the shipping and hassles.

It would be easier for me to just put the parts back on that I took off and I have to get a different transmission anyway.

You seem to understand the issues, the shop in L/A offers an RV camshaft, would that be an advantage for a truck I am going to use for towing. I will not be towing large loads just medium weight trailers.

I am going to go and talk to the rebuilder in L/A. he had a pretty good price.

I can understand the warranty thing.
One thing i would find out from them, or have them do is a straight up timing set. Its a pretty cheap way to free up some ponies. if they don't/won't, you can do that yourself afterwards....only costs you the price of a timing set.

I get the feeling you're not looking to set the world on fire, so things like a cam, aluminum intake, and headers are most likely not desired/needed.

If you decide to rebuild yourself there are some more things that would be beneficial, and especially if you're looking for a bit more towing power.

Just a little tidbit I do know. The D4VE that littlehusky had never heard of is actually a 4300 Motorcraft carb. I had that tag on my 74' 460 4 barrel.

I am not sure anyone was referring to a carb. The long block shop referred to it as a choice for heads.

I would welcome a picture of a D4VE head. I know they are listed, but I have never seen any. I was simply noting you may find a D4VE tag on a 460 carb. Sorry for the intrusion.
