From what I understand, F150s up depends on state... California, and possibly a few other states, required cats. F100, all states required cats. Don't quote me on this, as I may be wrong, but that's my understanding.

My 79 F250 was originally sold at a dealer here in Spokane, WA and had a cat.

Depends on where it was destined for, from what I understand. Others more knowledgeable will likely come by to correct me.

Kind of an open question with no real info...

Where are you located, and any idea where your truck was built?

Here in SC the 150 had cats, the 250s and bigger did not. Our laws say that if there is not one there then the muffler shop does not have to place one. So everyone tows there truck into the muffler shop. We have no inspections.

Either post your VIN, or if it still has the plate in the drivers side door jam (or door), post those numbers here and they can be decoded. Or you can look online and find a decoder for yourself.

My 1979 F150 4x4 300 6cy has a factory cat vin says is was made in Michigan. Truck was sold in Oregon at a ford dealership but was shipped from California Bay Area. Hope this helps.

I looked under my truck and where the pipe comes off the manifold and goes down, someone cut off the pipe and put a brand new exhaust on. There is no cat. Just a muffler. It won't do anything to the motor right?

No, it won't do anything to the motor. Cats are there for smog purposes.
