ok Ive traced my steering problems to my gear box heres whats happening there is too much play in the steering and when I grab the steering shaft I can turn it easily and the tires move real easy back and forth too so I am thinking it is a seal or something in the gear box. the truck is a 77 f250 4x4 does can anyone tell me if rebuilding this thing (or trying to) is worth it or should I just shell out the few hundred bucks and buy a remanufactured one? also here is another strange thing, the steering wheel rotates like 2 1/2 to 3 turns for left and only like 1 1/4 for right??? what is that all about? the tires arent rubbing against anything its just the steering it wont let me turn right its a real pain in the *** trying to park this thing any help is greatly appreciated thanks have a great day
You can rebuild it. But all you can get new is the seals and gaskets if any hard parts are worn you are out of luck. So its a crap shoot much better to just get a reman with a warranty and be done with it. And if you have never worked on recirculating worm drive gears before it is wise not to try it. They can jam up and cause the steering wheel to lock in turns.
Does this 1977 F250 have P/S or M/S? Is this F250 4WD a High Boy...or not?
1977 F250 4WD's assembled before serial number Y20,001 (High Boys) do not have a P/S gearbox. These trucks have Power Assist P/S.
The manual gearbox is used, since it has nothing to do with the P/S system. It uses a separate P/S control valve and ram cylinder.

1977 F250 4WD's assembled from serial number Y20,001 are not High Boys. Have Ford integral P/S.
If you have this type: redheadsteeringgears.com.
Go to their website and read how they fix the built-in flaw all these Ford integral P/S gearboxes have.
An autoparts store so-called rebuilt gearbox is nothing more than a resealed gearbox.
There are no new gearboxes available = obsolete.
btw: Since these trucks have a rag joint, it might be defective and the reason why the steering shaft is loose.
how would I be able to tell if its a rag joint or not? I can twist the steering shaft by hand fairly easily and the tires move with it if the truck is jacked up not to mention the problem im having with the turning radius wich is horrible when making a right turn, what is that all about?
Everything I have read says go with the redeadsteeringgears.com units. I have replaced several with auto zone, discount auto and even o'reilly parts and they just don't last but about a year, two if your lucky. I plan on buying one from them myself for my truck next spring.
