I don't know what it is.... If it's some kind of sensor or electronic controller then it probably wont work.

Are you trying to replace your tach? There are diesel tachs out there, or you could install a factory tach with a little work...

This is an AIC/ACPM Recent image by Roy_Thorne on Photobucket

Im not looking to replace the tach, I just like to use my AIC to keep an eye on my RPMs as its much accurate than the tach...plus it looks cool haha

I figured it couldn't be used to change the idle (since idi doesn't have many electronic components).
MY next question is is there a way it could be used to just read the idle?

It probably could read the RPM if it understands the pulse coming from the tach pickup. You would have to do some custom wiring, though.

I'm almost 100% positive there is no way in hell that fancy sensor will work on our trucks.
First thing of all, where the hell does it plug in? IDI's don't have an OBD port.
Secondly, where does a powerstroke get its RPM signal from? I'm not positive, but don't they have a crank sensor to tell the computer when to fire off the injectors? The tach on an IDI is an afterthought. Its a decent system, but it works by counting the gear teeth on the IP gear. There might be a slim chance the powerstroke gets its crank/tach signal from something similar, but I doubt it will be plug and play without some more fancy electronics.

There are other aftermarket tach solutions. Some can work off of a signal from an alternator (sounds pretty wonky, but at least some older VW diesels did that). There are also photo-electric type sensors that work off light, or magnetic sensors (like the 7.3L idi uses) that can be rigged.

.
I figured that was the case....but really want to use it in my truck (at least to read RPM...not change idle). I couldnt tell you where a PS gets its rpm signal from anymore...if you dont use knowledge you loose it.

It doesnt work off the OBD port. There is a small plug right above where the shifter (if manual) would be...it just plugs right up. Its a circular plug a little larger than a nickel.
