I ran into this same problem when I got my 2008 SD. I got a 12 inch receiver tube from tractor supply and drilled a 5/8 inch hole for a pin behind the end of the 2 inch DT Hitch. It sticks out a little but has worked great and I am still using it in my new 2011 SD.

2addy, it is no different than using the adapter sleeve. It may actually be stronger than the adapter sleeve because it spreads the load over the full length of the 2 1/2 inch receiver tube. I could not use an adapter sleeve because of the way the DT hitch uses the internal locking lugs. The internal locking lugs are not long enough to lock through an adapter and the 2 1/2 inch receiver tube. This was just a quick and easy fix at the time. DT did not make the 2 1/2 inch version when I did this back in 2008. I was thinking about ordering the new 2 1/2 inch model from the same place but since there appears to be trouble from there, I may just as well stick with what I got.
Let the drama continue! Just got back home from my trip to R&P Carriage (great people and service by the way. This is my second DT from them). I go to put the hitch in the receiver and it is TIGHT. I line up the holes and turn the lock and the lock pins turn slightly and then they are hung up. I turn the lock back and slide the hitch out and try this method a few times and try to turn the lock farther and it is stuck. I had to grab a pair of pliers on the key and turn it GENTLY. The key comes out and is mangled (good thing you get 4 keys with each hitch all keyed the same). Looks like I am going to have to Dremel the holes slightly to take care of this problem. What a pain!
Sounds alot like one of my previous posts in this thread...I thought it was due to too much powerdercoating on the reese titan pintle mounting plate.....I wonder if its possible that the square tube is not made exactly like others that all the hitches are made to fit.

That's what we get for posting in a thread titled "Augh!!!!" My adapter had issues with the hitch as well and I noticed a few others said the same so I'm guessing the tolerances on one or the other aren't up to snuff.
What a beautifully forged hitch though.

Reason: typo
I'm saying the tolerances are TIGHT period. Probably both companies to blame. There is not any wiggle room on that hitch. I believe the holes on the receiver (possible powder coat) OR the pins on the hitch are too tight. I will work on the truck more this weekend (maybe some WD40 in the pins to slide? Dremel?) and post results.
