Tom there is an option for the 2" receiver. You need to order the 12,500 lb towing option. Maybe it isn't too late for the dealer to make the change for you.
The funny thing about this 2.5" hitch thing is we have some Chevy trucks at work that came with 2.5" hitches and they also had the 2" adapter sleeve zip-tied in the hitch. I don't think it would have killed Ford to give us a $10 adapter with our $60,000 trucks.
I've heard on another forum that Ford is supplying the 2.5 to 2 adapter at no cost b/c of the problems they had. Anyone else heard this? Dealer doesnt know what I'm talking about (of course).
I'd be happy to pay $15 for one that fits. I've heard the Ford part is $60. Thats a bit much. I've been to 4 places and have yet to find one that slips in. I asked my dealer what the cost is but havent received a response yet.
Update - dealer just emailed me, it is 49.95 + tax.
I bought another Diversi-Tech 6" billet drop built for the 2.5". Will be in this week and I will take some pics and post them. They are great hitches but pricey.
My dad came down from MI yesterday and we WERE going on a fishing trip today. It would have been my first tow as well. I go place my Diversi-Tech Hitch up to the receiver and it was like a Tic Tac to a whales mouth I found out the hard way that I have a 2.5" receiver Class V. Son of a..... Time for a new hitch! BTW, I will have a DT billet 6" drop adjustable for sale shortly
Instead of buying a new hitch why not get a new DiversiTech? They have them for 2.5" receiver. Less of a hassle maybe. Not sure about the difference in cost but you can probably sell the 2" DiversiTech without too much problem.
Edit. I guess I should have read all the way to the end before chiming in with perfectly useless info.

$50 for a $15 part?!? Wow, nice profit margin. I found one at a farm store but it is a little tight; fixed it with a grinder and touch up paint. Also ordered a new 2.5" DT adjustable as well as I found out the hard way too when I went to switch my drop hitch from my old truck to new. Oops.
