guys i have a question for ya! i'm still waiing on my 351w to be rebuild we started with a bare block from what i don't know. we have all the parts except the flywheel, oilpan, harmonic balancer, & dizzy. my question is what balancer to get fluid filled or not? i don't even know what year balaner to get and i haven't asked my builder because i just thought of this a few minutes ago while thumbing thru the summit catalog. thanks for the replies....it's going in my 84 f150 it will be a flattapett cam bored .040 over gt-40 heads eddy preformer intake and carb stock replacement dizzy(when i get it) C-4 tranny 3:08 gears.....
A fluid-filled damper would, IMHO, be gross overkill on your build and a waste of money. They are geared more toward high RPM engines is racing applications where a perfect balance is critical to keeping the engine together. You don't need a high dollar damper on a relatively low RPM truck motor. Take a took at Professional Products dampers. They are decent, inexpensive pieces and you can buy different spacers to use with them to match any of the numerous balancer lengths that Ford used over the years with different accessory drive configurations. Make sure you get one with a 28 oz. imbalance. 50 oz. imbalance is only for late model 302's. Ditto with the flywheel. Last note - make sure that you get a rear sump oil pan AND dpistick assembly for an '80-'97 truck. The truck pan is different from any other application that I'm aware of.
thanks for the info i'm looking for a good place to order the oilpan & dipstick from or maybe i'll cruse the junkyard. i'll look up the balancer and see what they offer thanks again..
The junkyard will be a lot cheaper for the oil pan (and pump pickup), dipstick and damper. Plus if you find the parts on a 351W from a similar year truck, you are more certain to get the correct spacing balancer.
The rubber on stock balancers is often a bit bulged out and cracked but still is considered okay to use.
if you step up to an AOD you will also need to get a 28oz flexplate from a mid 80's crown victoria. the crownvic was the only vehicle to have the 351w/AOD combo.
the C4 was never put into an 80s year truck with a v8
One more thing about an AOD trans. Make sure you get the TV rod/cable setup right
with your carb or you will FRY the trans in very short order. It is absolutely critical
for the AOD trans to get that setup right because that's what controls the trans
pressure and shift points. Study this carefully before you go with an AOD.
ok i copy all that with the gears and the flexplate. i was trying to figure out which gears to get 3.73 or 4.10 i should be getting the trans this weekend great deal too! i was leaning towards the 4.10s so a 28oz flexplate & balancer huh!
