Harmonic Balancer Question
I have a '96 F150 with the straight 6(4.9L). My accessory belt would squeal everytime I turned on the A/C. After replacing the A/C the squeal was still there. After researching this website I found that the harmonic balancer/pulley can sometimes fail. The harmonic balancer is mounted to the crankshaft. The crankshaft pulley is then pressed onto the harmonic balancer and drives the accessories. A rubber piece separates the two. I guess this rubber piece wears out over time allowing the pulley to spin. I checked on my engine and found that the pulley is spinning easily around the balancer. I called Autozone and can get a new Harmonic Balancer for $170.00. I will be ordering it Monday, however, I have a question. Why can't I tack weld the pulley to the harmonic balancer so that it will no longer spin? I'm sure there is a good reason for making these parts separate but I don't know why. If I could tack weld the two together so the pulley doesn't spin I could save myself 170.00. My truck has 155,000 miles on it so I'm not overly concerned.
Thanks for any help provided.
Don't spend the money on a new one. Go to the following link.

About $50 plus shipping and it might actually be better than the original. The one I had rebuilt looks and functions well.
