89' Bronco pinging

My Bronco started to ping when I had to put some guages in it. I replaced the thermostat and doing that we turned the distributer to get to the water neck bolts. We tried to time it but don't know what top dead center is on the harmonic balancer? I just put in new plugs, wires, cap and rotor. It only pings when its hot and you have your foot into it. What do I have to do?

get a timing light, remove spout connector and time it. timing should be set to 10*btdc with spout removed. then reconnect tighten down bolt and your done. what kinda plugs are you using and what did you gap them at?

We timed it at about 9*btdc and it still did that. I do have motorcraft plugs in it and I gapped them to .044. I'm not sure what else I could do. What should I do if it still pings? thanks for the info.

I would pull codes. something else could be causing this being an efi engine . go to www.fordfuelinjection.com there is instructions on how to get the codes using a paperclilp and 15mins of your time. a bad o2 sensor could be causing a lean condition , the motor craft plugs are copper right not platinum (bad) . and when you set the timing you had the spout connector off correct? if its pinging at 9 then your dizzy might not be installed correctly meaning its 180* off.
