Guys, I have a question for you. How would a spun harmonic balancer make a engine run? Would it act like the truck had jumped time? Why you ask? My truck started acting up after I dumped the clutch one morning, it actually stalled while still at fast idle. I restarted the truck, it acted a little funny but I went ahead and started to work. About 8 miles later I notice the truck is running worse. I turned it off and got it towed back to the house.
I restarted it, pulled the spout connector to isolate the computer, no change. Turned it off. Pulled the dizzy cap and tried to turn the rotor. No movement. I tried to rotate the housing, no movement. I rotated the engine until the timing marks (deep v on harmonic balancer and deep v on passenger side of block) line up. The rotor is pointed at about #3. I change the timing gears. (Did I mention I hate phenaulic gears????)
Get everything together go to time the truck and with #1 at tdc the timing mark on balancer is at about 7 o'clock!!!!!!! What gives??????
As I rethink what led to the truck acting up in the first place and knowing something is up with the timing marks on the balancer I have to wonder if a spun balancer is what I had all along!!!!!!!!
So, I ask you gentlemen with your vast experience if this is indeed the case??
I had one go bad on my truck the rubber separated from the center steel so it bacame impossible to set the timing using the timing marks on the pulley.
However if the timing was set correctly before the rubber separated it should not matter the engine should still run fine.
