I have a 79 with a 351m, auto c-6. it is compleatly stock except the k&n filter, dynomax exhaust. It does not have a tachometer, and i want to install one. Is there any certain type i need? What do these engines redline at stock? I dont want one with like a 14,000 redline if i only redline at like 6,000 or something. It is that simple, right, just buy a tach and install it? I really dont want to change anything right now like ignitions or distributers. Thanks!!!
I have an old Sun tach mounted on top of my steering column. It has a red line pointer that you can move.I know mines an automatic, but the chrome tach on top of the column just has a cool factor.any parts stores will have them.
On my rig, the silly PO had installed a rice-burner 10,000 rpm flea market tach. It's now in the spare parts bin.
A Supertach II is like $40 retail. It does the job and is very affordable. I got one for $5 at a Goodguys swap meet. I set my "redline" at 4500 rpm. No need to rev a 390FE beyond that point.... generally.
Super easy install with four wires... red = power, green= tach signal from dizzy, black=ground, and white=dash light circuit... at least that's the code on mine.

The cool factor is the only reason I put mine in too! I mounted mine on top of the dash. (I don't have a dash pad installed)

Green=tach signal from dizzy, IIRC the little factory connection cap on the coil (if you still have it) has "tach" molded into it. I believe it's the negative side of the coil. Just a little extra info.
I have autometer in my 77 F-150, 66 Fairlane and 1992 Mustang. I through a sun pro in the high boy because it was free and I don't want to spend a bunch on that truck.
As a kid, I built lots of 1/24-scale platic models of cars, trucks, and vans from Monogram, Revell, and AMT.... now my builds are 1:1 scale and costs are easily 24 times more expensive!!!
2x with Blown 331. My rig is a budget build ($4800) and the cost-to-value consideration plays heavily in where and what parts I buy for it. My prime sources are bargain bins at swap meets and wanderings at the salvage yards... like a $20 push bar and $15 pair of offroad lights.
Yea as a kid I always wanted a 69 Mustang Fastback expectly a 429 Boss an a truck like the brown Chevy on CHIPS with the rollbar an so on. I got the truck now come spring I will get the Mustang. An mine was budget build at $4,000 an I past it up a long time ago now it will be like $6,000. It don't take them long to add up but as always there is always more wants then money.
