I'm thinking of buying a 1974 F250 Custom, 4x4 with auto trans, and a 460. The body is in great condition, and the interior is immaculate, and it is in my price range. The problem is, I don't want a 460 (uses to much gas). I have a 78 F250 Custom with a highly modified 351M (will be a bit easier on gas). What I would like to do is swap just the engines between the two (keep the trans and drive train the same to their respective trucks), and keep the 74 and sell the 78. First off, is this even possible? Secondly, would it be worth the trouble?
The 460 is a 385 series and the 351m is a 335 series so it won't bolt in. They are different engine family's So everything will need changed to put the M in.

and by everything, you mean transmission, drive train, front and rear end?
Actually if they're both auto then I would assume a c6. The bolt pattern for a 460 and 351m or 400 are the same. You'll have to buy or build motor mounts to put the 460 in the 78. You may or may not have to deal with exhaust issues in the 78 with the 460 depending on the manifolds or headers currently on the 74. Anyway, a few items to juggle but it should be fairly straightforward.
my 2 cents for what its worth, i had an 81 f250 with the 351 modified in it, had a high rise aluminum intake with a 600 cfm 4bbl carb had long tube headers and a bigger cam in it, cant remember the size exactly but if i went one size bigger it would need a stall converter, anyways it had a c6 4x4 with 35 in tires and i got around 14 in the city and around 18 on the highway if i kept my foot out of it. believe it or not that was the ACTUAL mileage i got with it
wow...that's fanastic....I'm glad my speedo doesn't work..I don't want to know my gas mileage...I don't think it's less than 10 though...i've got my carb dialed in very lean and my timing set conservatively
