I have a 2003 f150 4.2L 4x4 it's a manual transmission and does not have a tachometer. I will be installing one very soon and I was wondering what the engine redline is so I can go mudding efficiently. Also is anyone knows a link to a step by step install for a tachometer that would be awesome too, thanks alot

Looking back through this forum, the general consensus seems to be around 5500 or so is the safe and useful limit. By 5K, you're on the backside of the powerband, so no reason to keep revving it.
The electronic rev limiter, according to that post, is around 5700.
Something interesting I found:
to get a tach on your truck push in the tripmeter reset button before you put the key in, hold the button down put in the key start the truck, it will son come up in 'test' mode, release the button, hit the button to change modes, you will eventually get to a digital tach, you will hae to do this everytime you turn on the truck.
wow that's great, thanks for the info. I'm still going to be puting the after market tach on but until I figure out where to put the tach wire (sense there is no distributor it's EDIS) I'll be using the digi.
There should/will be a wire that goes to the computer to tell it the RPM of the engine, since it needs to know whether you do or not. Typically, this wire I want to say is tan and brown, but don't quote me on that. Hopefully someone who has done this before can chime in with the appropriate color. I did a quick search and didn't turn up anything, all my wiring diagrams are for '94 Rangers lol.
