Ya. If you really want good back up light output you will have to do the bumper gig or just mount them up something similar to mine. Even with those new tail lights (which are over priced on that link by the way), and new bulbs, you won't get the reverse light output that you want. Those 3357 bulbs just dont put off sufficient enough light in my opinion. I mean, they can be bright, but nothing close to having actual back up lights.
An even cheaper alternative. Cut the holes in your existing bumper yourself and mount some AUX lights. I'd say thats the way to go if you are trying to save the doe for better things.
yeah on my explorer which i have gone light crazy for some time. i have holes plasma cut and mounts welded in behind so i'll have flush mount driving lights in the rear bumper. i allready have it set-up for a switched power and on with the backup lights.
i've been toying with the idea of cutting the bumper and putting them in there...but idk yet. i have the perfect 4" hole saw to do so and maesuring it out is easy...hmmm
It might look hokey, but the barn doors are fiberglass and hollow. If you found small bright lights, that were flush mount, with the right look and mount them towards the outside of the X.... maybe they would be safer from damage.
