work lights/backup lights

i know i cant be the only one that find the factory backup lights pathetic? with that in mind i've been thinking about how i wanted to go about this. i'm not sure this is exactly what i wanna go with. but for now it will work. we are going into our dark season and it'll be very nice to see where i'm backing.

i used 2 Hella work lights 55w i think(not 100% bout that) i then mounted to the hitch. they are kinda low for my taste and i see them getting taken out by a snowbank possibly.

so if you have some other set-up for backup/work lights post a pic please!

my final plan is to have a set of lights, on a 3way switch. one will be for backup lights. the second will be a ignition hot power source(most likely the 7way) for use as a work light when need be.

anyway heres the pics

call me crazy but i'm also thinking some small 55w fog lights mounted stelth like in the center of the running board would make for nice light out to the sides, when your in a very dark rural/remote area more lights the better!

It was some time ago, but I read a good thread about this very thing in the superduty forum. The lights the fella used were Very bright, and stealth. No way of knocking them off. Maybe do a quick search in there,(if there is such a thing of quick search)

Would you be able to mount those lights in place where the license plate lights are? Since that surface is on an angle, not sure if your lights are adjustable. You'll need to drill into your bumper. Those license plate lights are almost worthless. Plus, you'll have 12V (switched to your headlights, though). Just a thought.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the emergency (and some other road construction) vehicles have a really super bright flashing light hooked up to their turn signals (or emergency flashers)? Wouldn't it be possible to use these, or some similar setup? I would like to have some super bright backup lights in the factory backup light spot. Does anyone know if that would be possible? Or where one might get setup like that?

It may have been my thread. Here is the link. It will tell you everything you need to know to have them set up to auto come on when you put the truck into reverse, and also have the functionality of a switch. Make sure to read through the whole thread first. We did some trouble shooting with the wiring diagram but it is all tuned up.

Here is another thread for more AUX lighting.

I kind of ended up going crazy with the lighting mods but I dont regret any of them. End results are all good. Check the Gallery.

Hope this helps.

They are usually either hooked up to their emergency flashers or a seperate switch. It would be possible to hook them up to your flashers but do you really want to have to be using your flashers just to have light when you are backing up? That seems kind of intense. I mean, as you can see if you take a look at my thread, with the relay, you can have multiple options on what engages the lights. So even with the way I set them up I could add another function to the switch post on the relay. I could tap a switch wire into the flashers and have them flash when the hazards are engaged. Hmmm. Now you got me thinking. Thanks....

Here is a few pics of where mine are mounted, They are not sticking out past the bumper.

Not yet bud. I have a Superchips 1805 Flashpaq Tuner on lock though. Craigslist deal. He is sending me the invoice today, then I'm going to priority mail him a money order. He already took the posting off of Craigslist. I am stoked !!

Your profile pic cracks me up every time!!

Good luck with Superchips. Hopefully it gives you the SOTP, you are looking for

I am in the same boat as you, to many mods and preventive maintenance and not enough green stuff to do it all at once.
I picked up a used set of gauges, so once I figure out how to get them installed, then I will put a tuner on the xmas wishlist.
I guess waiting is not that bad, it gives me something to look foward to open on christmas.

Actually, I was thinking why can't they be put in the factory backup light location? If nothing else, I may just eventually get one of those rear bumper that have the backup lights built in and change the lights to more powerful ones.
