Hey guys, I am looking for a little help. While towing my 25' toy hauler on somewhat flat highway my truck started to loose power. When I gave it throttle, it acted like I was barely pushing it. I pulled off the highway, put it in park and popped the hood. By the time I got the hood open, the engine pulsed a little and stopped. I tried to start it and it wouldn't turn over. Tried again, same thing, starter engaged but couldn't turn the motor as if it was seized. Ford towed it in and said they would call me with updates. First update was that they broke the starter trying to get it to turn over.
Any ideas? This is really freaking me out! Btw, 26,000 light miles on it.
Sorry for your troubles. Sounds like the engine is hydrolocked, probably a blown egr cooler filled a cylinder with water. Most likely it will have a rod bend and you'll be getting a new engine.
They have now ordered a high pressure oil pump. They are saying that it has a check valve on it that failed and spiked to over 3000 #'s of pressure. They are saying that the oil pump provides pressure to the injectors and caused the injectors to over fuel the motor to the point that the fuel would burn creating a "hydrolock" type of issue. They removed the glow plugs to relieve the pressure and also looked at the cylinder walls with a bore scope. So far, they are saying that everything else looks ok and no bent rods.
Does all of this make sense?? This is my first diesel so I am just taking their word for it. What I dont understand is if they have a high pressure fuel pump to provide 26,000 #'s of fuel pressure why the oil pump "provides" pressure for the injectors?? I guess I'll see this saturday when they install the new pump.
Update, I called the service manager and discussed this issue. He is still holding firm that the spike in oil pressure caused the shut down. He did however agree to the fact that the oil pressure does not fire the injectors.
The pump arrived today but without a gasket I guess!! Hopefully they will get it on by the end of the week.
On a side note, is anybody an expert on the 4r100 tranny? My expedition pretty much lost reverse today!... I guess it's true, when it rains it pours!! Both of my vehicles are down and out!
Your trans is probably going to need a rebuild, unfortunately. I own a 99 SD with the same trans, and it slips terribly in reverse but goes great in drive. The only other thing that could possibly be wrong with yours, is it may have stretched linkage which could make it not drop in gear correctly.
Good info on this site but sometimes it scares the crap out of me. AZ, hope things work out for you. I have a little over 20K on mine and I watch it like a hawk.
Well, I called around and all of the shops felt that the forward gears stuck togeather or welded themselves. I'm not quite sure how that would happen with fresh fluid to a vehicle that I dont tow anything with...and it has a cooler.
Anyways, I sent it to the shop for a remanufactured $1600 tranny.
Update on the Super Duty (I can't believe I hyjacked my own thread)
Well, turns out the service manager didn't know his *** from his elbow. I spoke with the mechanic when I picked my truck up and asked him about the oil pump. He said there was never a problem with the oil pump but that the fuel pump failed. No "spike" in pressure or anything even close to what they were telling me. I guess the manager at least got the "pump" part correct. I guess it siezed internally and locked the motor up. New pump, gear, and gasket.
So far it runs ok but now I hear a "gear whine" at idle and low speeds. Kind of like a super charger, just a little quieter. I made a trip to get my toy hauler back home and put about 700 miles on it with no change. I asked the mechanic about it and he kind of shrugged his shoulders and said drive it for a while, its probably the new gear. I asked then what and he said he would have to pull the cab off again. Any ideas on what is making the sound? I am assuming its something in the new pump. I would hate to have the cab pulled again but there is no way that I can live with the noise. I am a freak about things like that.
All you can do is wait and see. They probably won't go back in on their dime for a noise if it's running fine. What year is it? Hopefully plenty of warranty left.
