Ford F-150 Caked in Ice May Freeze Out Cruise Control…

New F-150 in Ice

…but it sure makes for one awesome-looking snow sculpture.

While scrolling through the F-150 section on Reddit, we came across the picture above of a newer Ford F-150 completely coated in ice. It turns out that the owner spent four hours driving through a blizzard and while the truck performed well, the gadgets which require on the sensors mounted up front quickly stopped working. Ultimately, while this post allowed the Redditor to show off a pretty cool picture, the post was really more of a complaint about the gadgets failing in poor weather conditions.

F-150 versus the Blizzard

When RR50 first shared his picture on Reddit, he provided the following basic information.

“Four hours in a blizzard…my adaptive cruise control stopped working from ice about 20 miles in.”

We aren’t surprised, considering that the entire front end of the F-150 was encased in ice and snow. This is probably one of the reasons why most people recommend against using cruise control in very poor weather conditions.

That was what PvtQuickly pointed out.

“I was always told to not use cruse when it’s shitty out like that anyway.”

FriedLasagne had his own issues one time while driving in the snow.

“Was driving my 94 in a storm once and it just quit running. The intake was clogged with snow”

MunkPunt was curious which engine is in this F-150, and if it was an EcoBoost truck, he wondered whether there were any issues with ice on the intercooler.

“You have an eco boost or 5.0? Was wondering if eco boost if the inner cooler was affected.”

To which the OP replied with the following.

“Eco boost…..couldn’t tell any difference in driving.”

That doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as the intercooler

Which Headlights are Best in Snow?

During this initial discussion, Odd-6 pointed out that older Halogen headlights are better in the snow.

“One benefit to halogen lights is they are less prone to freezing over. That looks sketchy”

However, CrockODuck corrected that.

“Not by much. LED’s still make quite a bit of heat. Heavy snow will freeze any headlight completely”

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
