Not One, but Two Ford Super Duty Trucks Have Traveled 1.3 Million Miles
These two Ford Super Duty trucks eclipsed the million-mile mark by a long shot, thanks to diligent maintenance and other tricks.
These days, we tend to see little more than horror stories when it comes to new vehicle reliability. Amid all the recalls, forum posts, YouTube videos, and social media rants, there is certainly reason to believe that vehicles just simply aren’t as reliable as they used to be. However, there are still some out there racking up serious miles on trucks with few problems – and with the original powertrains. This is especially true in the realm of diesel-powered trucks like the Ford Super Duty, too.
In fact, there’s more than one Ford Super Duty out there on the roads that has traveled more than 1.3 million miles, which is a sum that’s hard to wrap one’s mind around. Most of us have seen an odometer roll over once or twice in our lives, reaching that six-figure mark, but nothing even close to seven. Thus, it’s worth taking a look back at these two Ford Super Duty trucks, their owners, and how they managed to accomplish what few vehicles could even dream of doing.
Some will undoubtedly remember the story of John Freeland and his 2000 Ford Super Duty, which hit an amazing 1.36 million miles a few years ago.
Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk brought us this story at that time, and incredibly enough, the Texan native bought this truck brand new and added every one of those miles himself. He did this by working as a hotshot driver, making long-distance deliveries and averaging anywhere from 1,800 to 18,000 miles per month.
Along the way, Freeland performed regular maintenance to his truck, utilizing OEM Ford parts and products, performing regular fluid swaps, and using BG diesel additives to keep the injectors clean. However, the engine, transmission, and rear end are still original to the Super Duty, though he did have to replace some things, like the clutch and alternator.
Freeland isn’t the only one with a Ford Super Duty that has traveled over 1.3 million miles, however – he was joined by Andrew a bit later, who owns a 2013 Lariat model, though in this case, he purchased the truck when it had a more reasonable 98k on the clock – with an EGR and DPF delete. He too followed the truck’s maintenance schedule religiously, and used both a fuel additive and oil stabilizer along the way.
However, Andrew’s ownership experience hasn’t been quite as problem-free, as he’s had to replace things like the u-joints on more than one occasion, along with the turbocharger a whopping three times, and even the transmission and transfer case.
Regardless, given the prices of new trucks these days, we still imagine that he’s better off financially versus trading his Ford Super Duty in once – or several times – over the years.
