Braking brake on a F 53 ford chassis

I mean parking brake
Please let me know if I am not in the right forum. I own a 1999 windsport motor home on a f53 ford chassis. Does anybody as any information on the parking brake. It's a drive line brake. I have to replace the brake shoe. I read somewhere that after unbolting the drive shaft that you can not removed the brake drum. There is a housing between the drum and the trany. I understood that you have to unbolt this ***'y from the transmision? There is oil in this housing with a level plug at about 10 O'clock. any help would be appreciated.

Howdy,

You have a parking brake like the one (below) I'm going to use on my 55 F-600.

I don't think you can easily remove the drum. I believe it's pressed on and most usually either exchange it for a rebuilt one or they send it to someone that rebuilds them...

I did find a rebuilt unit on ebay for $650...... and I also found shoes. I guess I'll be wanting to do the same thing when I wear mine out...

It does bolt on the back of the trans where the transfer case would go on a 4x4.

Thank you for the info. Nice picture very helpfull .I will attempt to do this next spring. Once you have the ***'y on your bench there is probably a way to press the drum off. It would be nice to have a drawing or a procedure to do this. I read somewhere were guys did replace the shoe themselves.

I think you're right. I needed to use a brake like this because my rear axle/brakes do not have a provision for a mechanically actuated parking brake.

I wanted to change from the old T98 4 speed box (which does have a lever operated ebrake) to the E4OD automatic (or 4R100), which you're probably using on your motor home.

I had a real problem finding one. Most of the wrecking yards want $500-600 for a used ebrake unit like this.

If you do pull yours, and it has a lot of miles on it you should probably carefully inspect the bearings. Ford doesn't seem to have a well known procedure to check the oil in the unit and when it leaks out the bearings fail......Fords procedure to fix it is to replace it (for about $1200!!!) there's always 3 or 4 rebuilt units on ebay for about $600 exchange.

When you get yours off, please post some pictures and a narrative.

Cheers,

Rick

EDIT:

I did a little searching around and found out that you may not be able to just press the drum off....evidently there's bolts that hold the drum on from the front..

I think you'll have to disassemble it to get it apart.... POST PICTURES!!

Another point to consider,

You can probably buy those "shoes" on ebay too....

I did a search on Rock Auto and found them a little cheaper than the ones I found on ebay.....ebay is not always the best deal! do your homework!!........AND I think Rock Auto is one of the sellers that advertises here!

I Rick

Thank you. I check Rock Auto and your right they have parking brake shoe. I couldn't find a listing for a motor home but I think they are the same as E450. I think the shoes are easy enough to come by. What I need now is some kind of a procedure to press the drum off. Ford keep saying that is't not a serviceable part. There is only 34000 KM (20,000 miles) on my MH. I check the oil in the brake ***'y this morning and it is full so I think I'am O.K. I will not go at it before the spring but when I do I will post pictures.

Well, with only 20k miles on it your brake shoes shouldn't be worn out unless you drove with it "on" or the seals leaked ATF (the oil inside the unit) on them.

They probably don't indicate it's rebuildable because they want to sell you a new one (for nearly $2000 retail )

I did find 2 on ebay, 1 for about $650 USD(rebuilt) and a new one for $850 USD("buy it now"). I don't think the new one requires a "core"... In reality, that's a bargain!
Ford ZF Super Duty Parking Brake F350 F450 E350 E450 :eBay Motors (item 320435085857 end time Oct-19-09 09:31:50 PDT)

The core value is frequently around $500. If I was still looking for one I would probably buy that new one!

I think you'll have to completely disassemble yours to get to the shoes. If it's not just worn shoes, and yours did leak a little oil on them it'll at least need new seals along with the new shoes....... There's only 2 bearings in it so there's not much else to "rebuild".

I don't know how they come apart, so I look forward to your disassembly pictures!

Regards,

Rick

Thank you Rick

I just bought the MH from an old fellow and he toll me about the brake. I assmed he drove with it on. I don't think it got to hot there is lots of oil in it and no leaks. Can find no play in the bearings. I will look forward to get more info from you. I did some search on it but could not find much.
