Relocating a Pyrometer probe from downpipe to Intake Manifold.
Hey All,
When I bought my truck, an Autometer Pyrometer was already installed nicely into the dash, just right of the steering column. The probe was drilled and "strapped" to the downpipe in a saddle clamp.
I'd like to relocate the probe to the intake manifold for my accurate EGTs but the current probe isn't threaded. What next???? Can I order a new probe and just plug it into the gauge? I haven't pulled the dash to look at the guage yet.
Thanks!

Hey Loren,
In your post you mention that you want to put your pyro probe into the intake manifold, that's not the correct place to install it. It needs to be installed in the exhaust manifold.(you probably meant that) The easiest place that most seem to find for install is the drivers side exhaust manifold towards the rear, easy to do. If you get a new gauge, it should come with a probe. You will have to either leave the old probe in place or have the hole welded closed in the down pipe. The manufacturer of your current gauge may have the thread in bung that you have to tap the manifold for, or you may be able to use the one you have now and just move it to the manifold.

If you have the clamp type probe instead of the threaded probe, you can install it in your up-pipe. You'll just have to look at the clamp you have to see if it will fit the up pipe since it is smaller than the down pipe.
Exhaust manifold or up pipe are both acceptable locations since they're right next to each other, and are both pre-turbo.

You should be able to take it right from the downpipe and move it to the uppipe. I have mine drilled and strapped to the up pipe. I have the same pyrometer. Let me look and see if I still have the other parts. I have mine installed right after the bend in the uppipe so I'm pretty sure I am still getting accurate EGT's. Putting it there took me about 5 minutes to install. The hardest part was trying to tighten down the clamp. Seems to be holding up just fine.

Hey guys... Thanks for the replys... I was thinking exhaust manifold when I wrote intake, my mistake.
Good thinking with the uppipe. My stock 3" downpipe might be around the same size as the up-pipe. I'll check that out tomorrow.
Superduty4x4, appreciate the offer. If my existing clamp doesn't work, I may take you up on that offer a send you a $10 spot for your troubles.. I'll pm you if need be.
Thanks!
Oh.... and BTW, why tap a hole in a 3" down pipe when you can replace it with a 4" down pipe??? right....
