It appears that there are not that many people that change out the glass on their vent windows??

Hey Bill i found your old post here as I was searching on installing glass tape on my 54 F100 vent window. I found the glass tape at Blue Oval Truck PN WE-0075. A roll about an inch wide and rubberized on one side....felt sort on the other side.
My question is does the RUBBER side go against the glass or the felt (non rubber) side?
And on the felt side (whether against the glass or in the channel) does that side require adhesive?
Thanks Len

Here's a link to Bob Drake's page. There are a lot of suppliers for it though. Just enter "glass setting tape" into Google and a bunch of suppliers will pop up.

Here's a link to answer your question.
Eventually I'll have to do the same thing. I've got all the stuff, just haven't gotten to that point yet.
window setting tape. Adhesive? [Archive] - TriFive.com, 1955 Chevy 1956 chevy 1957 Chevy Forum , Talk about your 55 chevy 56 chevy 57 chevy - Belair , 210, 150 sedans , Nomads and Trucks, Research, Free Tech Advice
Yeah, I know it's a Chevy site but the answer is "universal".

Glass Setting Tape for Vent Window
Hey Mike I wanted to follow up with you on that vent window. I ordered the correct Glass Setting Tape. I found it on ebay pretty easily. Anyway after banging my stubborn head against the wall trying to make what I had on hand work, I ended pulling it all off, cleaning up the glass and channel and starting all over again.
This time I used the CORRECT Glass Setting Tape like you suggested. For my 3/64" for my 54 F100. It is CRITICAL that you get exactly the right thickness for your track or it will not hold. There is a formula for figuring that out if you need it.
Anyway the tape (not really tape at all not glue sticky but very tacky) was gummy tacky like on both sides, about 1.5" wide and I got a 20' roll for about $11. Here is the ebay item # 151375721189 .
I cut a piece to length, wrapped around edge of glass leaving extra on both ends. I used clothes pins to hold it place. On the corner you will have to cut little V's of course to make the curve.
Then took my wifes hair dryer on hot for a minute or so. Heating it up just enough to make it soft and mold it to the glass. Pulled the clothes pins about 5 minutes later and she stayed in place.
Slid in the track to test if I needed dish soap I did not. It slid it with some good solid force but went all the way in. Right away I tried to pull it out a little to make sure it was not too loose...naaa she is there to stay. I figure leave the vent window closed for a week or so to let it all seat in and dry up and in place.
Anyway wanted to share that with you and anyone else replacing a vent window. Your glass setting tape set me on the right path. The other stuff I got before with cloth on one side and rubber on the other was totally wrong like you said. The key, was to get the right stuff and the right thickness. After that it was smooth sailing.
Thanks for your response it helped me figure it all out.

The stuff you want is the butyl tape that is designed for that, NPD has it for cheap,($12.00 for 4') fold it over the glass and press it down so it sticks to the glass, cut a pie slice out at the tight corner and form it back together (this stuff is very workable you can cut it and work it back together) I sprayed glass cleaner to help it slide in, then get a soft mallet or rubber dead blow hammer and put the frame on the edge of a block of wood so you dont damage the hinge and hammer the glass in, it takes a lot of force to seat the glass, then just trim off the excess thats hanging out of the frame.
My glass buddy suggested not using polyurethane, if you ever needed to change the glass you would have to throw the frame away as getting the old urethane out would be tough.
