any gains w/ the AFE intake over 6637?

I was going to get the AFE stage 2. Luckly enough for me the day i was going to do that someone came on here with a print out of Air filter #'s. I think Pete (F250_) Knows who did the study and where the results are. I know that there is one comparison on www.7point3.com but i do not know if this is the one that others have talked about before. Personally I have the 6637 and I love it. Plus its about $300 less then the AFE.
Good luck, And welcome to FTE.

I'm just starting the process of evaluating the two. I found a good deal on a used AFE II that I couldn't pass up. A couple nights ago I both installed the AFE II and changed my oil. Right now I'm using the standard filter with cover. I saw no difference in boost or EGT's on a 3 hour drive today. Noise in the cab may be marginally lower, but I honestly can't tell much difference. I also did a little live data with AE and found the intake air temp to be 8-10 degrees above ambient. I can't remember what it was with the 6637 and sensor zip tied to the wires under the filter though, but I think it was around 12-15 degrees above ambient.
When I change this oil, I'm going to do a UOA to see what the silicon difference is compared to the 6637 I've run for the past 2+ years. I also got a PG7 filter with this setup and may give it a try to see what UOA's are like as well. I called AFE to find out the difference of flow between the standard filter and the PG7, and they said it would be 2-3 HP lower with the PG7. If UOA's come back ok with the standard filter, I may not ever even run the PG7 unless I know I'm going to be in some dusty conditions. It only takes about a minute to change the filter between the two.

Good to know about the intake air temps, good info coming here!! I am mainly wanting this for towing and the lower noise level and the lower intake temps both sound good to me, 250$ saved though sounds good as well. Will let you guys know what I decide, but I might wait a while and do some more research.

I purchased the stage 2 w/ pro grd. I intalled with no problem. I noticed the sound died a little with the replacement. I also felt a little more power in the higher rpm range. However, I also added a 4' mbrp exhaust at the same time. That might have something to do with it also. Looks cool. It better be for the price.

1 - Noise. I tow as well and I have heard A TON of 6637 lovers say they are loud. "but the noise is nice to hear..." Not for this boy going three hours down the freeway fully loaded in 40T.
2 - Cool Air - I know the thread says it doesn't matter bc boost overcomes it, but it can't hurt
3 - Dirt - The 6637 filters so dang well it can overcome it, but I can only imagine keeping the loose dust off the filter can't hurt. I know at the end of summer after hauling chopper boxes, gn w big squares, and pulliing tractors the engine bay is TAN! If I had a 6637 it would be coated with this ultra fine dust film/slime/crap too. I would imagine a cover would help this but it still wouldnt be the best.
I think I have my mind made up, but $375 is a lot of money to spend on an air filter. Like I say, I do have some metal working capabilities so the 6637 cold air may happen. I can email an excel spreadsheet with the costs from MANY suppliers if anyone is interested. Hit me with an email and I will get it done. ANYONE LOOKING TO DONATE A USED 6637 THAT I CAN PICK UP IN SE WISCO OR DO A GROUP BY FROM FLEETFILTER SO WE CAN GET THEM CHEAPER HIT ME UP!

Scott, from fleet filter you aren't paying $50. They are around $37 or so with shipping, a worm clamp from home depot is less than $4 and the PVC coupling I used was less than $3 I think. so it still ends up less than $50 and it isn't very loud loaded. You will benefit greatly in the meantime, from better filtering than the stock set up. If your engine is getting as dusty as you say when working on the farm, you could be on borrowed time as far as at least the turbo is concerned due to the inherent poor filtering qualities of the stock set up. If you don't like the added noise, you could certainly build your box or step up to the AFE set-up. But in the meantime 20-30 minutes of your time and less than $50 and a huge gain in air quantity and quality into your engine sounds like a bargain to me. The consequences of waiting can be measured thousands of dollars at a time. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I wish I could find that. The one and only stage II have have seen on eBay went for 250 plus shipping that would be around 25. For threehundred dolla I would rather spend an extra 100 and KNOW I had a good filter. I would have bought a brand new filter for it anyhow bc I don't know if that guy blew it out or did something stupid. I assume he was stupid since he said...it is supposed to be even better than K&N, but I dont know...

Scott,
I too tow alot with my truck and I tow alot of weight. Going down the freeway I barely notice any extra noise, even pulling up hills. The bit of extra noise I do here (if my window is down and the radio ain't on) lets me know that it is doing its job. I agree with you about the worry of dust since i drive in and out of my barn ten times a day. But I got a dust cover from Pete (F250_) He says he has used his for over 10,000 miles and see no change in the time to need a new filter then having his stock air box. Obviously in any mod to your truck it is truly self preference but I figure anytime I can save $ and have something just as efficient that is fine with me.
