cold air intake question...

I had a question about the difference between a cold air intake kit like the riffraff 6637 I am looking at compared to some of the AFE 2 stage kits that are pricey but what the heck is a stage 2 kit do exactly? is it really needed? what are the benefits?

I did the riffraff 6637 mod, a couple of observations now that I've been running the filter for a week. With the truck ideling and the hood up, I can hear the truck breathing. Going down the road I hear the intake spin up but I also hear a "hush" sound as the rpms change with the transmission shift.

I guess the turbo whistle can be heard better but I can't to with the window down and it's not a clear sound with the window up going down the road.

Riffraff was great, but I think I'd do the ford AIS if I were to do it again. More then likely I'll switch to AIS as soon as I can get my HPOP leak fixed...

there really isnt going to be a difference performance wise, the stage 2 kit is going to have sort of a heat shield to help keep the engine heat away from the intake but there is practically no difference in performance, that has been proven anyway. took me 15 min. to put the 6637 in and would probably take about an hr. for the afe, and an extra 200 bucks outa your pocket. i love my 6637 and if i had to do it again i would go with teh 6637, i personally love the turbo noise.

the AIS is going to keep your turbo whine quiter so if you dont like it, then this is a good choice and has the best filtration. probably a good idea if your in a real dusty area like desert or your offroad a lot and have to worry about dirt.

I'm so new to the 7.3 Powerstroke I'm not sure if I'm hearing turbo noise or maybe another problem. Buying the truck used, I just want to do the best job I can with the truck.

well you cant go wrong with either one! i couldnt hear my whistle to well until i took the foil off the hot side intercooler pipe. that will REALLY bring it out.

This is an absolute imperative if your on the "Dryside of the state", or if you spend any substantial time over here. Yes the AIS is more expensive, but the filter element lasts much longer and does a better job to boot. Depending on your tastes and what you like to hear when driving, the turbo whine/drone from the 6637 kits may not be too appealing, you may like it but the Mrs. might not....just food for thought.

So... dry or wet? My wife and I agree the cab is a no-whine zone, but we both love the whistle out the pipe... and a 4" exhaust with AIS and a 38R gets it done. Before the 38R, I needed something solid to the right (bus, building, or barrier) to bounce the bray back. Now... all I need is a passenger-side window open and the serenade is made without the aid.

I have the AIS and 38R and I am verry happy with it. When I had the 6637 I had a few passengers in my truck that commented "if put my feet too close to the dash will they get sucked in?". The AIS is much quieter, factory looking and reasonably priced.

Don't mean to hijack, but is 38r just a wheel or a complete new turbo? Benefits?

It's a bolt in replacement turbo. More air flow, lower EGT's, ball bearings, less possability of surge, can handle 40 lbs of boost.

Stock and 38R

I had both filters. Currently running the 6637 filter.

No difference between them. Save $$$

yea I am leaning towards the 6637 due to price and budget (mega millions please lol). I also look at the garrett 38r turbo oh man I would like to install that wow it looks nice compared to stock.
