Looking to buy a 98 f250 w/a 7.3 for $3,000. torque converter bad though, does seem to run strong. Just wondering if it is worth buying though. Any input?

Welcome to FTE. It will depend on the overall condition of the rest of the truck IMO. A good torque converter will cost more than $800 but the trans needs to be removed so it might be a good time to rebuild it. A good rebuild will cost $2K...so the total could excede $3K. The trannies are the weak link in a great drive train. A bullet proof trans is more than $5K. A cheap rebuild may be as little as $1500 but they usually don't last.

A 98? I thought they didn't make a 98 F-250 diesel just the F-250 LDs, they just had the early 99s in 98 like they have done the 08s last year. 3000 dollars is a good deal you can get that out of a strong motor, but as stated it will cost a good bit of money to do the redo the tranny.

There are no 98 250s unless it was a gas model LD250. 97-03 bodystyle. Ford had the 97 250s OBS an in mid 98 made the new bodystyle superduties. But there were called the 99 models. No I hope I didnt get you confused there.

Ooops I posted wrong. They made the LD250s in the 98 model year only in the bodystyle off the 150s 97-2003.

I do not know if I should say this here but I am new to Fords except for the 55 F150 in my back yard. The body is the pre 98 style. I was wondering about that though because I did searches for 98's and found nothing. The body is very straight on this truck, the interior needs work. The truck was used to haul a fifth wheel trailer hauling equipment.
Thanks for all the input.

So its the body style like the truck in my avatar. its will actually be a model year 97. Eithe way if its what you are looking for and have the cash to get a new tranny you will probably make out fine.

Sounds like the truck has had a hard life, it sounds like a 97 OBS, they are tanks thats for sure. Does the motor have any leaks that you can see? If you could get the price down on it more would be great for a fixer upper.

Yes the body style is like the '97 and I was thinking of offering $2,000 because he has had it for sale for awhile. It does look like the oil pan is leaking because undercarriage has oil all over. Could not see any spots under truck where it was parked.
Where is the best place to get a torque converter (and maybe tranny) for it and did they install more than one type of tranny in this year?

Welcome to FTE. If the motor runs at all that would be worth buying. Post here and you will be able to fix ANYTHING on the truck. I agree it is a '97 or older truck. One of the easiest way to check A towing truck is to look at the mileage. How many miles on it? You can look at the turbo, find where the leak is from etc, etc, etc. We will help you and you will be fine. Warning be careful of the PMS bug...
