My truck registration is for a 1999 F250 SD 7.3PSD. However, I was looking for the exterior color code and noticed the Ford data plate stating the truck was MFG 02/98......Is this truck considered an early 99 or a 98 and do I buy parts for a 98 or 99 or does it matter? I've been buying for a 99. The only issue that came up was when I bought the K&N air filter and I needed to trim it down to fit. I called K&N and they said my truck was an early 99. The filter was for a late 99. Thanks for all your replies.
Jeff
To determine if your truck is an early or late 1999 model year, locate the tag on the drivers side door. Vehicles built before 12/7/98 are considered early 99 and vehicle built after 12/7/98 are considered late 99.

Your are partly right.. the date should 12/07/98.... Any superduty built before that date is a early 99...
here is example:
Air Box: 1999.5 – 2001 Ford Motor Company Stock Air Box XC3U-9600-AA
Box Characteristics: Second OEM revision for application, designed to eliminate several problems found in original 1999 fender well inlet system, and to coordinate air induction with battery cooling (per the mfr.)
Box Applicability: Original Equipment for build dates of 12/07/1998 and newer; formerly retrofittable to all previous Super Duty F Series from ""1/98 to 12/7/98"" equipped with original F81A-9600-AA box per TSB Article 98-16-11, superceded by 99-6-4. Box (XC3U) is now obsolete, as is the box (F81A) it replaced.
Box Manufacturer: Visteon Corporation

first couple months of 99 would make your truck a 99.5..look at the spider pipe below..notice on the spider to the right.. the tube sticking out to the right is where the driver side IC pipe runs to..on the early 99 the tube gets a smaller like a funnel going into the spider..on the late 99 painted orange here... (99.5) that tube stays a full 3 inches going into the center of the spider..also the 2 tubes at the bottom that go into the intake plenums are a full 3 inches on the 99.5 and the early 99 they where 2 inches.
Now. Get rid of the K & N. The quicker the better. Do a search on 6637 and you'll see a great filter for your truck (inexpensive), or get a Ford AIS (just about $200), or get an AFE Stage II with Pro 7 (big bucks).

I thought I remember something about a difference between pre March 99 and Post March 99. Mine was built in 2/99, which has always made me wonder if mine was acutally an early 99 or not.

I think that's the crossover date for the front suspension stuff. You should be in the middle...
Ron is right on the intake piece. That is the definitive answer for the engine. I am not sure what the definitive answer is for the suspension other than measuring the rotor depth.
