some of the diesel engines have blow by that make you think there is a problem. I'd do some digging before changing engines.

I would check the entire stock breathing system that comes off the top of your valve cover and that goes to your intake tube and make sure it is not plugged and flowing freely. Remove breather unit on the valve cover and clean it.. be careful not to loose the 2 "O" rings under the unit. (there is a wire type mess inside). My 99 has always had blow by.. a normal thing i think..

yes, it is impossible to stop ALL combustion gasses from not getting past the rings. face it, the combustion pressure is close to 2300psi, and all that pressure is trying to escape, and the easiest place is the rings, especially if it is bad. my first recommendation would be to remove the CCV elbow that goes from the left valve cover "doghouse" into the plastic connector between the intake boots. then check to see if any gasses flow out of the "doghouse". you could use a Hg or H20 manometer to check crankcase pressure, to see the condition of the rings. we have one at Diesel Tech.

27.7''h2o= 1psi of restriction.

doing the CCV mod will help prevent gasses from being pressurized into the crankcase, it will vent to the atmosphere and be less restrictive than that stupid reversed bung design in the intake.

well there is no model year 98 powerstroke. so its either a 97 or 99. either way is depends on how swap it in. if you want a drop in the 97 won't if you do a long block i think it will but the 97 will have a mechanical fuel pump in the valley instead of an electric pump on the frame rail. a 99 should work i think but i am not upto snuff on the difference between a 99 and a 99 1/2 cause they are a bit different.

If you found a 98 model motor(mfr date), it is for a 99 (early) superduty..
