97 F150 odometer/tripcounter not working

Got a 1997 f150 97 is analog not digital so there is no blackout. Got the truck like this with the problem. It worked one morning then i pushed the reset counter and it stopped. I took out the gauge cluster and spun the gear i think by a tiny motor and the tripmeter worked along with the odometer adding a mile. So I know the gears are not striped. Any info??

i dont know about the F150, but the boy had a 95 Mustang with similar problem. The speedo worked, but odometer did not. took it apart and it had a stripped racka nd pinion gear. I know you said it is not the gear, but i would check to see if the speed and odometer have the same input. If the speedo works and the odometer does not, that narrows it down to the small gear box, i think.

my 98 f150 trip counter has stopped before and it wouldnt reset but after driving a few miles i guess it would move away from the bad spot on the gear and start working again. ithought it was just my truck.now i know im not alone

I would say to check if the gears are the same as the 94-98 mustangs and if they are then it should be no problem finding a 94-98 guage cluster at a junk yard

Think it could be the cable down to the t-cast/tranny? Or the gear in the tailshaft?

Thumbs up Odometer/Trip Counter

I was finally able to remove the cluster and found the gear causing to
problem it was missing a tooth but it took along time to figure out how
to remove the gear, finally got the gear replaced and the instrument
panel back to gether and found that the gages were off, so after
spending some time trying to calibrate to gages, I gave up and went
online and found a used one with almost the milage on mine.
The price wasnt bad compared to what they wanted to repiar mine
/////approx 200.00 ///////////125.00 for the used one.
I really appriciated all the posts I got trying to help me.

I ended up having to buy one from a junkyard for the same problem. Although my truck has almost 225,000 miles on it my ODO says 67,000 miles. I did have to put a sticker on my drivers door jamb though stating the correct mileage.
