Had same issue with a '97 E350 as well. There is a little gear that wears out-it's right on the odometer itself-if you pull the cluster you'll see it. We found replacement gear on ebay by searching 'Ford odometer gear' or something like that......cheap and relatively easy fix once the cluster is out.
It seems like a lot of work, I think a Hobbs hourmeter will tell me all that I
need to know for maintenance, just have to find the correct spot to hook into that is hot only when the key is on. Any ideas? Thanks for the info.
Its rather easy to get to the radio's key-on hot wire. 2 bits of coat hanger wire to pop the radio are all that you need. Yellow wire with a black stripe. Ground is black with a light green stripe, or anywhere metal.
If you spend hours upon hours with the key in the accessory position, tapping into a circuit that's only live with the key in the RUN position, like the fuel pump circuit, will be more representative of engine running hours.
A bit late to this thread, apologies if the original problem has already been solved. Here's some info I posted a while ago about cluster anatomy--hope its useful: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...r-anatomy.html
