Thumbs up bio-diesel in a 84' 6.9

hello again......i just got my first tank of bio-diesel at my local coop....wow!!!....i live in the mtns in s.e. tenn.....its sorta like running high test .....more power (pulls the mtn like it wasn't there), reduced black smoke, and seems to get better milage....they are using 30% soy bean oil.....is this typical....has anyone got any experience with this stuff....i am pleasantly suprised and don't smell like a french fry or fish............

Is your CO-OP selling pure bio-diesel? The few place here in BC typically blend about 80-85% regular diesel with 15 to 20% Biodiesel. I can't see that having a significant impact on performance.

bio-diesel in an 84

i may have the name of the stuff technically wrong.....it is 30% soybean oil per gal of diesel....it is a blend.........but my truck has had the fuel turned up abput 15% and the timing has been changed...and has 5 1/2 " dia exhaust...i could tell a ...BIG...difference or at least thought i could.

The 5 1/2" exhaust with the fuel turned up explains it.

They must be blending it themselves. The norm is 20%. I've been running it for 6 years. At the higher levels (if you never had it before) you should change fuel filter after the second tankfull. It will clean your fuel system of all impurities accumulated over the years and it winds up in the filter.

In this old of a truck you need to check your old fuel lines b/c biodiesel sometimes makes these wear away.

so wait... this isn't actually biodiesel, it is just 30% vegetable oil mixed with 70% diesel?

Thanks BigRed,

Very interesting,

B100 actually has about 8% less Net Heating Value that No.2 Diesel; however it has a siginficantly higher Cetane value (Min. 47) which is close to that of modern European Cetane values for No. 2 Diesel. With the higher Cetane compensating for the lower BTU/Gallon the two fuels probably come out as a wash for mpg. Probably would have to cut the boost a bit as B100 burns hotter, not too much of a concerns on the IDI's as they the turbo boost is very conservative to start with.

Going to a 2% Biodiesel blend might be a good thing for all the IDI motors once the new ULSD sulphur regulation (max 15ppm sulphur) come in in July of this year.
Anybody had any problems with the Stanadyne injection Pumps or injectors from running BioDiesel?

I ran about 150gallons of biodiesel in the truck this winter.
Since March, I've run about 200gallons of WVO in a blend (WVO + Diesel).
depending on temps I've varied the blend. At the moment it is about 65% WVO / 35% diesel.
I warm up on the front tank (100% D) and flip over the the blend tank and obviously make sure to have all the WVO out of the system by the time I shut down.

runs just fine, I'm only using the best of the best oil however. The oil is also cold filtered. I'm going to be building a heated tank in the near future (whenever I get a greak from work) to burn the lessor quality diesel.

no IP problems, only problem was I developed an air leak before I figured out when the engine was warm enough to switch fuel tank, easily fixed.

I have always heard that WVO and diesel or even Biodiesel will not stay mixed due to different weights. Biodiesel and diesel will blend but WVO and diesel have two different properties and will separate when mixed. That is what I have always heard and have been told.
