All-Terrain Tires for 2004 Stock Wheels

Im wondering what is the largest size tire I can put on my stock wheels without complications. Im looking to put an all terrain tire on.

Thanks for any input.

Welcome to FTE!

It would be helpful to know what size you currently have on your truck, the OEMs do vary in size.

In my case, I have the 18'' rims, and I want BFG All Terrains, so that means that I will have to step up to 285/65R18's as they are the only 18" BFG's AT's unless I change rims.

Not a big deal as the step is small, and I do have a tuner to adjust the speedo. With rising gas prices, I have been thinking that I may have to skip the bigger tires. Time will tell.

That is true, I really wasnt thinking ahead to the gas mileage issue. I already have a Jeep running 35's tires. I really dont need two vehicle sucking the $$$ out of my pocket even faster than they already do.

Lot's of people are running 33" tires on stock 4x4 or 4x2 with 2" leveling kit and 35" tires on 4x4 with leveling kit...and that's with the stock rims

I have Stock rims 17 X 7.5 with 285/70R17 BFG ALT's and they work fine with no lift. I will be putting on a leveling kit soon. I see no reason I will need 35's and I spend quite a bit of time off road.

i put the 285 BFG AT's on mine, and my gas mileage dropped about 1.5 mpg. Not a lot and when you really factor in how much that will cost you a year, its minimal. Figure if you drive 15000 miles a year, that will add about $300 in gas or 111 ,more gallons.

However, the mental anguish of getting less mileage on an already needy vehicle is a different story.

Did you happen to get your speedo recalibrated? If not, part of the decrease in mileage could be attributed to this. Larger diameter tires would show up as less miles on your odometer. But, larger tires also weigh more (usually), and more rolling mass contributes to less mpg also.

I didn't need to. I have a GPS navigation system and it was 2mph fast before the tires went on. Now its dead on.
