Tires and Wheels

What are the largest tire / wheel combos for a 2004 Excursion that can be mounted without making any vehicle alterations? I'm looking to put a set of more substantial all terrain tires - any thoughts?

285s will fit, but the front might rub a little but it looks cool.

I bought a set of steel wheels for my X out of the local paper. I had a set of 305's on them and a set of all season on the stock aluminun rims. Just this winter I went with a set of all terrian on the steel rims. They dig good off road but they are noticably louder and I am glad they are for winter only. We haven't had much snow in Ohio yet and can't tell you how they compare. I do like the narrow tire in rain over the 305/70/16. The 305's looked meaner, didn't rub and looked a little over-stuffed on the original rims. My boy thought they made our X look "cooler". I don't know if you can see them very well in my picture in my gallery. JOHN

I have 305/70/16 tires on stock 16x7 rims with no problems, just turned 40,000 miles on the tires and they have worn perfectly even by having them rotated every 5,000 miles.

I had 305's on stock limited rims. They had a little cupping but they came on the X when I bought it used. Don't know if they were rotated properly. I wanted load range E and went with the 265's for better handling in heavy rain. JOHN
