87 Ranger auto push button 4wd
I have an 87 Ranger 4x4 with the push button 4x4. (Up by rear view mirror)
I can push the buttons and nothing happens. They dont light up and the fuses are all good. I dont hear any clicking when I push the buttons like others have said.
Anybody have a solution for this, or somewhere to start looking?

Sounds to me like it is the electronic shift motor that is mounted directly to the back of the t-case. It could be jammed, have bad contacts, or just worn out. Best bet is to take the motor off the t-case (should be 3 bolts), disconect the harness and have a look. If you take the motor apart besure to mark where the plate goes on so that the contacts inside will be properly lined up. When mine when bad on my old 90 b2, it was a plastic bushing that had lodged between the gears and froze up the motor. I belive the best preventative maintenance for these push-button t-cases is to use them often, even if it is just once a week to let it cycle through 4hi and 4lo even if you don't drive anywhere.
hope this helps

Well Im yet to try that but there seems to be quite a few problems with the push button 4x4. I do not know much about 4 wheel drives but what does everyone think about putting on manual hubs? To the best of my knowledge i believe you need the hubs and a converter. Are you required to get the manual hubs for both front and back or just front?
Thanks for everyones help and responses

hey folks...dunno if this will help anyone...but i had the problem with the no 4x4 when ya hit the button...well i checked the transfercase motor and its working....even got a "good" boneyard module{by the way...not avail after market thru ford...but Pratt&Whittney<united technologies will sell it for 225.50>}:P
anyways...after checking everything including the auto hubs...found a neat lil trick from a ford parts mgr here in Pittsburgh.....the control module is in series with yer airbags and colision sensors also....i spent 6hrs and 100.00 for a boneyard module to find a corroded colision sensor by front grill to be the culprit....may wanna check that end of the system if yer getting dash lights for 4x4 and low range..also check for corroded lead going to the magnetic clutch inside...mine had a combination of the two problems.
just find it hard to believe FORD has not adressed this problem as of this date.
also i am currently tearing down my faulty module to see if it can be rebuilt....will post a follow up as to the results on it...
safe and happy driveing to all!!!:-X12

I'm not an exprert either, but you only do the front hubs. I hear warner makes a great after market set which I know they carry at advance auto. But it dosen't sound like your prob is in the hubs. I've read (mine are manual, as is the T-case) that they make a clicking noise when they go bad. I've also been told that the t-case modules go bad alot. If I were you, I'd try what some have said here, trace your wires and pull the connectors apart n hit em with a squirt of WD-40 (wipe them off a little before you reconnect em, don't want a short) to clean off any corrsion etc... And lastly, pull the t-case motor and check it out. But before I spent big bucks on replacing any parts, I'd look into switching the t-case over to a manual. Would be an easy swap ( shifter n linkage) if you can find the parts.
