What modifications are required to install a roller cam in a non roller engine.

The 87 HO 351w engines were flat tappet not roller.

You can use the spider retainer and H bars along with the lifter from a roller motor or purchase them from the aftermarket. You would need to purchase specifically a reduced base circle camshaft and change the distributor gear, you would also have to drill and tap holes for the bolts that hold the spider retainer down.

Or you can purchase bar linked roller lifters (more stable but cost more) and a reduced base circle camshaft, as well as, change the distributor gear to one compatible with the roller cam. This way is stronger, easier, but cost more. Depending on the company you purchase your reduced base circle camshaft from, you need to ask if the cam is compatible with your current distributor gear or if you will need to replace it, some newer cam grinds do not require the change of the distributor gear some do when you do a retrofit. A standard or off the shelf roller camshaft will not work with the above methods in your non roller block.

Good luck

I wish it were a roller as I have an 87 HO 351w but unfortunately thats not the case. Sux huh? Few years too early from what I have learned, the 351w trucks went to roller in late 94 and up models. later
