Question about exhaust manifold paint

I see they make engine paint that supposedly withstands 1200°. Last summer I got my exhaust manifolds and crossover pipe painted with "natural" or "raw" Dupli Color engine paint which is good for 500°. This color looked more silver than natural. So I painted the crossover with Dupli Color satin black and I painted new used manifold with the same paint last week. Now I am thinking of painting over them with Very High Temperature semi gloss black which is good for 1200°.

So the question is, if I paint over the 500° paint with 1200° paint will it hold or will the engine paint underneath burn off and affect the higher temp paint on top? Or will the engine paint on them now hold up? I still have one manifold and the crossover pipe off so now is the time to do it if it needs it.

Burn off

Abe,

I think the lower temp paint will blister and burn off, taking the other finish with it. At least that was the result I had on my VW intake.

Anyone else have experience with this?

x2 on leave it, the first layer 500 will blister and fail, your just sealing it in with the 1200. Im curious as to if it will delay or accelerate failure but not at your expense. Blast it and do 1200. then on to the next problem!

I wouldn't paint over it Abe. But I would wait and see if you have a problem. 500 degF is pretty hot. Your Y block may not have a problem with normal use. If it does wait until it blisters and peels. It's easier to blast off then.

Thanks for all the help and advice, guys. That is what I will do. If it burns off and looks bad then I'll deal with it later.

I don't remember the temp but I'm sure if you go to their website they will say.

1400 degrees according to this day

Cerakote is 2000 degrees and they make a ceramic version that insulates. https://www.cerakotehightemp.com/?gc...FY-EaQodI6YIng
