starter intermittently engages 87 f150

So I have an 87 F-150 V8 302 automatic where the starter is intermittently starts the motor on its own turning the key back and fourth a few times or I hand crank it and the starter then engages. Any idea what could be causing this. The starter is an autozone rebuild.

I'm really not sure what you're saying? Are you saying the starter turns on by itself?

No when i turn the key to start the truck the starter will just spin or occasionally catch and start the truck when it doesn't i have to hand crank the motor a few turns and then it catches and the truck starts.

Either the drive is bad in the starter or you have a spot on your flywheel where the teeth that the starter engages are ground off or both.

Sounds like teeth are missing on the starter gear or flex plate.

You beat me to it.

im dealing with this right now myself with chip truck.iv got the trans out and the flexplate on the way.
remove your inspection cover.have someone hand turn the engine over while you watch the flexplate for a bad spot..........like the one i just pulled:

funny how the engine wants to stop right there so often isn't it?.........or at least so it seems lol.dealt with it for about a year.no more.
inspect the starter gear too like the others said.could be like mine.as a result of the bad teeth,im replacing the starter too because some teeth don't look perfect on the starter either.i don't want to risk it wearing the flexplate again.
i stop and start my engine in this truck upwards of 50 times a day or so,so it doesn't surprise me.

rub it in,you lucky sob.you don't even need to pull your trans.

i got mine all back together, save for bolting in the new starter.yup.gotta love the lifetime warranty.exchanged mine there as well.i keep giving AZ lots of business because they treat me right with the warranties.it's a win/win.
