Over-achieving starter?
Over-achieving starter?
Don't know if anything is wrong with the starter or what, but it seems that it is stronger than what the motor needs to start. It doesn't keep going after I release the key, but it sounds like the starter motor is still going too much after the fact. I am probably just confusing you guys but I thought it was weird. Like I have a starter for a giant diesel on my 302...
if its the wrong starter it will just grind the teeth off your flywheel and refuse to turn over untill you re-ring the flywheel... no big deal lol
if you're having trouble just buy a new one, if not leave it alone

My starter on my 302 does the same thing for years and has never given me a problem.
My mechanic friend made a comment once about it being the fastest starter he ever heard. I think it's mainly due to the loose rings based on the amount of blowby when the PCV is disconnected.
Low compression will cause the motor to turn over very easy therefore less torque required by the starter.

Looks like the same starter I've seen on other 302's. I was speaking figuratively about it being the wrong starter, it's just what it sounds like.
Stosh, your comment about the low compression make a lot of sense. I haven't checked it on this engine because all I have is one of those hand held testers, I want to get the screw in type to make it easier to check all 8.
