I've got a '92 F-150, 8 cyl and 70k miles. My starter is acting like the ENERGIZER BUNNY -- it just keeps going, and going, and going... problem is, sometimes when I start the truck, the starter motor keeps spinning after the engine is running. It will sometimes do this even when I turn the key off and remove the key. Evidently, the Bendix disengages OK as there isn't a god-awful racket like something is being destroyed. It started this a couple of days ago and seems to be happening more and more frequently. Also, when the starter motor does continue to turn (doesn't do it every time I start the truck), it will do so for 30 sec to 1-2 minutes before stopping on its own accord. I've replaced the solenoid on the fender wall, but that didn't fix things. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Yep, We had the same problem,With our bronco! It was like a metallic noise,A grinding sorta thing. We took out the starter and jumped it with jumper cables,And sure enough it was the starter..Replace it as soon as you can..Cause it can pluck up your flywheel and a 89$ part beats the high price of a flywheel,By far.
